See and Ride on the Hybrid-electric Bus!
Metro Transit currently has 3 hybrid-electric city busses
manufactured by the Gillig Bus Corporation in Hayward, California. The design
uses a Cummins Diesel engine to provide motive power combined with an Allison
parallel hybrid-electric EV Drive motor/generator system and batteries
to utilize regenerative braking power during acceleration. The result provides
a cleaner, quieter, and more efficient alternative compared to traditional larger-displacement
Diesel-only systems. It
is the first parallel hybrid electric, heavy duty transit bus ever built
and its advantages are higher energy efficiency and higher road speed capability
than series hybrids.
Hybrid buses have smaller engines than standard buses,
so when a hybrid bus accelerates, it cannot produce enough power by itself. Therefore,
it employs extra energy recaptured every time it slows down or comes to a stop.
During acceleration, that extra energy, stored in batteries, supplements the
acceleration without taxing the engine further.
State government has recently announced plans for Metro
Transit to purchase 20 more of these hybrid buses.
