Starting in January 2004, a team of 46 U of M undergrads from 8 academic majors devoted over 43,000 hours of extracurricular research, design and fabrication to create the "Borealis III" solar vehicle. It competed in the 3 day Formula Sun event at Heartland Park Raceway in Topeka, KS in May and finished 1st, 36 laps ahead of the next finisher. It ran the 2500 mile North American Solar Challenge from Austin, TX to Calgary, Alberta in July and finished 2nd, 11 minutes behind the leader after 54 hours of running. Borealis III will be on display and the presentation will highlight the technical features and describe the competition events.
