SAE International - Twin Cities' Section
November 2004 Dinner Meeting

Meeting Date:  November 17

Twin Presentations at this Event:

Building Small -
A Small Talk on Nano at the "U"
National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network
   Presented by:
Steve Campbell   Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Seeing Small -
Nanocharacterization at the "U"
   Presented by:
Greg Haugstad   Director of Characterization Facility

This event will be a presentation and tour of the University of Minnesota's Nanotechnology studies at Electrical Engineering / Computer Science building, 200 Union Street SE. The meeting will take place in (conference) room 4-174. The Washington Avenue Parking Ramp is located directly across the street.

After the presentations by Drs. Campbell and Haugstad, those attending will be provided with tours of University's Nanotechnology facility.

Steve Campbell is the Director of the NanoFabrication Center and a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Professor Campbell also serves as the Minnesota lead for the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN). His work on high-k materials in the late 90's has led the semiconductor industry to now consider this to be the single most important obstacle to the continued improvement of integrated circuits. Professor Campbell is also well known in the area of nanoparticles, both from a contamination perspective and more recently for their possible use in nanoelectronic devices. Professor Campbell has organized many conferences and workshops, serves as an editor for the Journal of Semiconductor Technology and Science, and as a reviewer for numerous journals.

Greg Haugstad is director and technical staff member of the Characterization Facility ("CharFac") in the Institute of Technology, University of Minnesota. The CharFac is part of the Minnesota node of the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network, and is also closely affiliated with the University's Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) and Industrial Partnership for Research in Interfacial and Materials Engineering (IPRIME). Dr. Haugstad received his B.A. in physics from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Minnesota following a research fellowship at 3M studying "stealth" composites. His teaching includes a graduate course in materials characterization; lab instruction for undergraduate and technical college classes; training for CharFac clients; and short courses in scanning probe and ion beam methods.
