Donaldson Company, Inc. - Diesel Emissions Reduction
Presented by:

Bill Droessler
Director of Environmental Projects – MN Environmental Initiatives (MEI)
Diesel engines are "the workhorse of industry". They're the most reliable and fuel-efficient power source available. Yet their emissions have not kept pace with other power sources and they emit excessive particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions relative to other power sources and contribute to poor air quality in urban centers.
Increasingly stringent emission standards for new clean diesel engines will reduce levels of both PM and NOx by 90% from 2002 levels. However, the long life and slow turnover of the diesel engine will delay air quality improvements, so alternatives are needed to improve air quality. Rules and programs are being developed to reduce emissions from on-road and non-road mobile sources, employing strategies such as fleet modernization, repowers, retirement and retrofit.

Wade Wessels of Donaldson, Donaldson, Project Engineer
Mr. Wessels works in Donaldson Company’s Retrofit Exhaust Emissions Group, a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University and pending 2009 MBA graduate of the University Of Minnesota Carlson School Of Management.
During his undergraduate education Wade worked with Caterpillar’s Electric Power Group and with Midstate Manufacturing reconfiguring diesel engines for off-shore use. He began his career with MCI in Chicago assessing and addressing the quality and maintenance needs of 30 large diesel generator sets powering server houses across the city. Since joining Donaldson’s Emissions Group in 2004 he has been involved in the design, development, production, field testing and application of retrofit diesel emissions control systems on both on and off-road equipment. During this time Wade has also worked with teams to bring 3 technologies through the government verification process. Currently, Wade is leading product verification efforts for 2 new Donaldson diesel emissions technologies.
Bill Droessler, Senior Director of Environmental Projects - Minnesota Environmental Initiative
Much like Clean Air Minnesota’s partners, Mr. Droessler brings experience and perspective from all sides of the issues. Bill Droessler has worked on environmental issues for major international corporations, state and federal agencies and nonprofits. Prior work experience includes environmental law for the Zurich American Insurance Company, Program Director for Minnesota Public Interest Research Group, and Director of Outreach and Programming for 1000 Friends of Minnesota. He holds a BA in Government and History from Beloit College and a law degree from the Environment and Energy Law Program at Chicago Kent - College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology.
