Environmental Catalysts
Presented by:
Hans Hildenbrand
W.C.Heraeus GmbH / Chemicals Division
Purification of Exhaust Emissions
For the purifcation of motor exhausts Heraeus offers diverse coatings on a large variety of different forms, such as metallic
or ceramic honeycombs, knitted wire structures, woven screens, fibres and sintered metals.
They are used to reduce the exhausts from:
  • small engines for example in lawn mowers, motor saws and a lot of other garden equipment
  • motor bikes
  • special vehicles, like Quads, Trikes or SUV's
  • cars (aftermarket) and motor sports
  • Diesel-engines.
Catalysts for Mobile Applications

Today catalysts are required in many fields for mobile applications. Fork-lift trucks and vehicles for mines which are used in enclosed spaces are equipped with Heraeus catalysts. Heraeus supplies the market for post-equipping automobiles and has developed special catalysts for busses and trucks. Recently Heraeus began fitting motor scooters and motorcycles with catalysts.
Catalysts for Stationary Engines

Stationary motors can be powered with different fuels (natural gas, petrol, diesel oil, heavy heating oil etc.). Heraeus offers a suitable catalyst for every application. The Heraeus oxidation and 3-way catalysts guarantee the required reduction in pollutants even over long operating lives. Coated ceramic or metal supports are used for this purpose. These can be supplied additionally with housing including cones and flanges. The design is customer-specific and provides an economic and optimized offer for each application. The areas of application cover a range from small systems cogeneration to gas turbines in the megawatt range.
Catalysts for Small Engines

Millions of individual small motors are manufactured annually. They are used in, for instance, motor saws, lawn mowers and motor boats. In order to reduce pollutants from such motors, Heraeus offers economical catalysts which are adapted to the special requirements in use.
Diesel Particle Filters

The particles from diesel motor emissions are listed as carcinogenic in the "Technical regulations for dangerous materials" (TRGS). For this reason diesel motors which are to be used entirely or partly in enclosed working areas must be equipped with particle filters in which the soot released by the motor can be trapped. The filter regeneration by combustion of the particles is aided by a catalytic coating which significantly reduces the ignition temperature of the soot.
