The October SAE-TC meeting proposed meeting topic will be discussing development of hydraulic and electric hybrid devices.
Eaton Corp Hydraulic Hybrid Test PlatformHybrid system development has been ongoing for both electric and hydraulic technologies at Eaton Corporation for some time. The SAE October meeting will be held at Eaton’s Hydraulics Division at Hwy 5 and Mitchell Road in Eden Prairie. Vince Duray and Robert Golin will describe Eaton's hybrid technology offerings and development, and the specific strengths related to each technology.
Hybrid systems in specific stop-and-go vehicle applications have shown the ability to simultaneously reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. An initial and promising hybrid application is within the North American refuse market, in which the Hydraulic Launch Assist™ is soon to be released. Refuse trucks are a major consumer of fuel, which enables a hybrid system to dramatically reduce end user operating costs, US oil consumption, and harmful emissions.
The HLA is a parallel hybrid hydraulic regenerative braking system.  It converts energy normally lost during braking and stores it in the form of high-pressure hydraulic fluid. This fluid is then used to provide a positive torque to the driveline in the subsequent acceleration event.  The HLA system has demonstrated in field tests on customer fleet trucks between 18 and 28% better fuel economy, four-fold reduction in brake maintenance costs, and up to a 6% improvement in productivity when compared to the non-hybrid trucks.

Notes:
It is a joint meeting with the ASME.
